假释官杰克·马布里(罗伯特·德尼罗 饰)只有几个星期就要退休了，他希望把自己手上最后的案子都处理好。其中一个案子涉及一个名叫杰拉德·斯通（"石头"）·科里森（爱德华·诺顿 饰）的纵火犯，他试图申请假释。杰克最初并不满意 "石头"粗鲁的态度，对他申请提前释放的请求也没有太大同情。眼看着假释希望渺茫，"石头"安排让他的妻子鲁斯塔（米拉·乔沃维奇 饰）去诱惑杰克，但是这样的动机和意图渐渐在激情与堕落中迷失，而渐渐的，这场关于假释的博弈也成为了一场死亡的游戏。
